College Football Maps Week 4

Children Behaving Badly
Children confined to an institution will do the strangest things or each other. Sometimes, it's just a tradition that has grown from year to year, like playing pranks on newcomers. Sometimes it's antics that usually ends up in prison getting everyone, but not worth it? On occasion, intimidation raise his head a little nasty with a focus on younger children or the scapegoat bedroom. Fortunately, there was not much bullying at home system, and thugs always found that within a year or so, the younger boys who tormented had matured physically and eager to return the blows he had once received.
Newchies or newcomers. Each house had a room boot I was a square brick building in the backyard and housed some benches and toilets. There were several rows of coat hooks on one wall. A newchie enter boot room alone could be a nasty surprise. As was their boots and cleaning brushes on the bench, could find himself up to Heaven and suspended from a pair of coat hooks by the pads of his khaki uniform. It was a position from which escape was nearly impossible and the unlucky fellow can not block for a while until other boys came to his rescue. I remember a poor boy hanging from the top row of pin layer over dinner. Of course, for waste that was distributed at times, he would not have missed much.
the new guys soon introduced to the legend of the headless battery. This was the ghost of a boy obsessed drummer different school buildings, including the clock tower. Gospel was a fact that several boys had collapsed and died in view of the headless corpse! Honestly! Among the many stories and rumors surrounding the battery without a head, was his silent march to a muffled drum through certain houses or dormitories at night. A curious newchie discover that the dorm was the same favorite drummer in the now sleeping. That night, hearing the sound of a drum the boy was hiding in terror under the sheets, giving up the call of the wild and wet, probably the bed.
Horseplay: During wet weather or cold, we carry heavy military coats or coats as they were known. We marched to the dining room and coats hung on a long narrow room next to the room. After food, should have been an orderly evacuation of the dining room to collect the coats. Often, however, this would turn into a scrum and we open ourselves entry way to grab any shield could find. It was total chaos. In fact, on one occasion, I carried a small bottle of perfume hoax call and shook wallflower on the assembled throng. It was much more powerful than a stink bomb and the ensuing stampede have adorned any African game reserve.
Another type of antics includes the fight in the mud on the field, wet towel on the blinking sessions bathroom (not recommended) and even Maring (alias throw out). For mare successfully a person had to stay awake until the school clock rang midnight. Then, he woke the rest of the bedroom and we tiptoe quietly through of the dark house to a young bedroom. Each member of the invading force take the side of a bed and a sign of the leader, twenty occupants unfortunate series of spots out on the wooden floor. As we became more adventurous, we ventured beyond the home and attacked the bedrooms of the houses of others. I loved Maring and always volunteered to be the bedroom clock. I had no trouble staying awake, it was a skill he had perfected while awake slashers (wetting persistent bed) of sleep and escorted to the bathroom
For some reason, kids love the slide. When the ice was thick on the roads Access and parade, formed an orderly line and take turns to run and glide across the ice in heavy army boots. The creation of slides was strictly forbidden because they were a danger to staff members, and we could not think of a better reason to do them. Back in the bedroom, the younger children found a rather more comfortable sliding. With its highly polished floors, the bedrooms were generally off-limits during the day, but hiding under the beds until the coast was clear. Then, pushing from the back wall, try to see how many beds could slide underneath. One boy was very good that and, once, slid across the length of the wooden floor bedroom. It was a record and will probably never be beaten. I can still hear his head crack against the wall. Sometimes the house matron discovers and yell 'numbers 2, 6, 54. Outside the bedroom! Immediately: "In five years, never heard her use our names, we knew our numbers just laundry. In fact, several years after leaving school, went to her and greeted him like me '.? Hello # 2 you still at sea '
Intimidation: Clothing numbers above were used for other identification purposes and for more unpleasant tradition called 'beats'. If you were 54, then the 54 th day before the end of term, they are entitled to receive 54 strokes or punched in the arm. This was difficult in children up in numerical order. The exception to this procedure is that the child, whose number was 2 receive a "bedroom attacks, which meant he could be beaten an unlimited number of times children in their bedroom. But the number mercy 1 child because he was entitled to a home attack. In fact, within one or two days of end of term, the kids were very excited about going on leave usually forgotten. I was number two in my house but I remember being in the finals of a bedroom attacks. Maybe it was beaten unconscious?
The dining room was often the venue for some strange intimidation tactics. For example, a particularly nasty governor would sit with us arms folded behind his back when he had finished eating. Clearly, this value turd not see food as a social occasion and we are glad to hear the grace call and then escape. The call of grace, however, could be the signal for a nasty and painful joke. We sat in the big banks from five to a bench. and if one of the boys had offended others in some way, in secret according to pounding the table on which he stepped back over to stand for grace. The victim innocent, then get the weight of the heavy oak bench, falling on the foot. I happened by chance one day and I can assure you it was very painful and left me limping for a couple of days. After that, always check the fall of the bank with one of my knees, regardless of who the victim was.
activities Suspect Running a historic institution with a strong military and religious moral ethos, school administrators were very concerned that the boys did not engage in any form of homosexual activity. In fact, they were obsessed by it and, under the guise of a sociological survey, asked to keep a diary "friendship." These were registered who were our friends and the kind of things we did for fun. Most of us wrote things like playing chess and making model airplanes from kits;. We knew what we would like to see would also like to assure each other that were prominent in their respective agendas. Having a friend in the same group year was perfectly fine. Having a friend in a group a year or so was reasonably acceptable, but the friends who is two years younger or older are discouraged definitely a much younger child once asked me to show him how to tumble;. the only gym activity in which I highlighted. We went to a quiet corner field of play and I showed the basics of handspringing until he could take place as a circus performer. While we were romping back and forth we realized a teacher hiding in a nearby grove and watch us very carefully. We looked with interest and, in a clumsy attempt to depart from the scene, which became entangled in some brambles and stung.
I guess they were pretty homophobic and made life very difficult for children who were chosen for the female parts in school play. One of the female teachers had been an actress and knew a lot about stage makeup, and when he had finished it was difficult to identify the actors reluctant by girls. They were subjected to insults, name calling, gestures and jokes, but he took very well. Of course, there were one or two who enjoyed being "tarted up" and show off his new beauty are perhaps still transvestism. In the early years, the only parts that were offered were: that of an orphan in Dotheboys Hall and a pirate Snooks named captain of machete or something. So there are not many possibilities to explore any feminine side there.
Occasionally, we would interview to review our newspapers and, sometimes, the teacher would ask us to interview more awkward if he had seen some strange things happening to children. As a newcomer, who had been occasionally runs the gauntlet. This meant running up and down the room in the set, while the rear shoes older children. I think it has its origins in the French army as a punishment for thieves. At school, however, this was an organized indoor sport one of the governors and was the great pleasure of getting to the boys who had lived abroad, for our white background was against our tans and did an excellent white. Consequently, I remember volunteering the information that some children are unnatural interest in our buttocks and the captain looked at me incredulously. Pretended shame so I did not press for details.
My answer, however, was not as slick as one of my friends. He was a smoker, but could not afford it and, tired of being ridiculed by fellow nicotine rich colors and decided to retaliate. When asked the question about strange things in between children, lowered his voice and confessed to the captain that he believed that these activities actually took place. The teacher gently pressed for more information. My friend explained that some highly questionable activities took place on Tuesday night behind the shooting range. What happened behind the shooting range was not more than a Smoking club and it was not long before its members were disturbed by firing teachers and the chaplain hoping to break a very different type of activity.
The mutiny
I have often heard that young people should be encouraged to stay in school to mature before venture into the great world. I am aware that they can buy more titles and, indeed, be more physically mature and at the time of leaving, but have doubts about emotional maturity.
To some extent, this is the subject of the following story concerns a mutiny of the school and the child's expulsion of the head. Several of my friends and I had left school two years before the incident. These were children who knew and had grown up with;. members of a group of one year grace that had made waves from the moment he entered as a group of newcomers year after rising to seniority, would be able school run effectively or cause total chaos. When we heard the story, we have fun, but had gone to seek his fortune, and the boys who were left behind children. Or maybe it had become old before your time?
One morning in March 1959, the children marching into the dining room for breakfast were found with a strange sight. Established through the small parade through the dining room was a classroom complete with tables and chairs, table, teacher, blackboard and easel, and several closets. Someone had removed the main teaching block during the middle of the night and carefully created an outdoor classroom. In a small perfectly manicured garden, not far from where the ghost room now stood, there was a show even more bizarre. balanced on four bins was Morris Minor car belonging to the Grand Canyon double name, RAEC, a teacher in a boarding school.
Today, the parade is a small parking overlooked by a webcam and students (boys and girls) are often aligned with the waves and to reassure parents who are still alive. However, traditionally the square of the regiment is a sacred area, a memory of those killed in battle, and walking through it in a careless manner arouse the wrath of a step Regimental Sergeant higher. Outside my place, 'orrible little man! "For a lot of classroom furniture had been dumped there was almost sacrilegious, but nobody would admit that the fact is missing. It did not take long for the kids to know that this was a joke at school for the "straw boaters' of Dover College, local public school. It was a well executed piece of nonsense that needs an answer, and one was immediate.
Some days later, a group of children in the third year he decided to go for a midnight swim. They went stealthily along the way back into darkness until he reached the pool (The building with a red door to the left of the picture). A small circular window in the building was appreciated previously open. During the next hour or so, which swimming, splashing and generally misled about the water, not knowing what was happening elsewhere. On his return to the bedroom and made a startling discovery disconcerting. The two prefects, whose bed was at the entrance to the bedroom, which appeared to be completely lifeless. When the boys of tighter controls, the mound in each bed turned out to be a doll made of a layer. Blankets of beds grouped were cold, no one had stayed there for at least an hour. When they had disappeared? Friends in one of the bedrooms of others reported the same mystery. Puzzled, they went to bed and slept, but did not stay asleep for long.
Around 4 am, the fire alarm rang at home and sixty children jumped out of bed and marched to implement mandatory call taken by the Housemaster. It seemed a fairly simple target practice. Were also used for these exercises, day and night, but several of the swimmers were relieved rather than there had been a couple of hours earlier. There were, of course, an ulterior motive for the fire alarm on this special night, though his purpose was not immediately evident. Anyway, with everyone, including the governors missing, says the parade was dismissed and yet the guys go back to bed. Breakfast in a burst rumors around the living room. A fire drill during the night had occurred in each of the eight houses. Prefects had been absent from their beds, but miraculously appeared in time for the drill. Two of the governors, however, were still missing. Rumors continued until lunchtime, when the real story broke and spread like wildfire, especially when the police appeared to lack the two prefects who had spent the night locked in their cells.
In the early morning, small parties of school prefects raid was 'dark' with burnt cork for camouflage, and in secret invaded the campus of Dover College. They took different routes through the outskirts of Dover, and gathered in the grounds of the College of different directions. Oddly enough, the local police had been warned that a retaliatory raid on the university can be mounted Dover boy "soldiers, but the prefects knew nothing of this.
Unlike in the incursion of the university, the damage caused by young soldiers lacked a certain amount of style, and betrayed their humble origins. rolls of toilet paper were strewn across the lawn and vulgar slogans were painted on the walls prominent. Some of the paintings was splashed Masters by a car. All this was done in silence for college students did not know anything about it. At the end of the break, all returned safely to base, With two exceptions caught by the law and totally refused to give the game away. What is the character building, you understand, phlegm and all.
After the school assembly, Jack Hobbs, the boy's head, it was only the commander and told him what had happened the previous night. He apologized for the attack, but felt that after the visit of 'Toffs' college, it was his duty as head boy have done something. Indeed, the commander at the time was the son of Sir Lancelot Kiggell who had been one of the high command in WW1. These leaders usually led his soldiers for the security of a mansion of many miles to the rear front line. So to inspect the site of the Battle of Passchendaele, reportedly broke down and cried, "My God, what we really send men to fight in the mud? Junior Lanzarote, however, must have been made of sterner stuff because Jack expelled on the spot.
In being informed of the expulsion, the prefects were furious and advised the commander that he could run the same school and to emphasize the point, they took their The rank insignia and reap what you sew the administration was about to experience the consequences of allowing a school to be run by the children rather than teachers. In fact, with the internal discipline leaves the prefects, children were generally more careful with them, but to pay immediate and tough-suspended temporarily a certain amount of chaos reigned. Upon seeing the Union Jack in the clock tower reduced to half-staff, several senior officers entered the room in a rage. The tower was a building government, flying the flag at half mast just was not running. The tower could be seen for miles and people can assume that our beloved monarch was dead. Inside the room, which called for silence and tried to speak but was drowned out by chants of "Bring back Jack!". One of them is at the end a table of young and stared deliberately small boys living there. Blatantly, who stared back and then began to beat their empty tin cups on the boards. This revolt was gradually taken over by the whole school, including large metal kettles were beaten at the tables in deafening unison! Finally, the officers, angry and red face, left the room to the cheers of the crowd hit. It was the first riot of child soldiers in the care of the Army Britain since 1862.
The next morning, some national newspapers covered the story, and the Times even put it on page 4. In those days, newspapers were censored regularly before being placed in day rooms or school library. Indeed, when the magazine published Soldier an article on Sir Lancelot Kiggell and anguish to see the mud of the battlefield, the subject was soon cut out. Naturally, the staff confiscated any papers that covering the riot and sent reporters away with a flea in his ear, but the cleaners and caretakers copies smuggled children to read. Sometimes just have to laugh at the crass stupidity of the military mind.
But the mutiny was short-lived. It happened in the last week of term kids eagerly awaiting the holiday was issued an ultimatum. No orders will be issued railway unless such foolish behavior ceased immediately. The things calmed down, the boys had their orders rail and the school was at peace for Easter. And Jack Hobbs? Originally accepted for officer training at Sandhurst, was rejected and had to join the army by another route. Interestingly, eventually became director of the London Dungeon, but was not allowed to join Old Boys' Association for many years, or allowed to enter school. In fact, it was not until the death of long-retired commander, 46 then the establishment finally forgave him.
A dark side
One of the less obvious benefits of attending a school run by a code of military conduct was that they were, to some extent, protected from excesses of corporal punishment. In theory, the Commander was the only person entitled Shock grant of sugar cane and these would be managed by Sergeant Major of the Regiment. Retired sergeant supervised us during business hours school and that it was inconceivable to beat or abuse us in any way. A band around the back of the head was to be expected from time to time, but his bark was always worse than his bite. They were generally friendly, caring and considerate and who were his boys.
Throughout the 1950's, with less need for care of children orphaned by the war, the school gradually altered in a capacity to adjust to a mix with the spirit of the grammar school. The change to a public school military brought the baggage of public schools rather unpleasant to him. Initially, there were minor irritations such as when the game was abandoned in favor of rugby. The reason given was that none of the local public schools played football, which was considered a game of ruffians. The fact that most children came of cities and the working class, where football was very popular, was ignored. On a more serious, however, was the introduction of career officials RAEC short-term contracts. Unlike the sergeants and instructors to replace these officials are not qualified teachers, who received his commission, under an education university. Accept positions in school to further their own careers, but had no special loyalty to him. Most of these officers were very nice and made the best of your stay, but among them were some sadistic thugs. They were a law unto themselves, and many reported cases of brutality and other forms of free abuse. Within a short period of time, the character of the institution has changed considerably. Without control of a weak administration, corporal punishment and intimidation slipped into the curriculum.
In the dining room, three tables adjacent to the boys sat in the other house. He always seemed very thin and home did not seem to make no award. Children rarely mentioned his experience, but it was clear that something very bad happens. Your Housemaster was known as Fritz and occupied every night sessions lashes. During his inspection of the dormitories in the morning, after the boys had gone to school, he made a list of those who hit by the most humble crimes, such as a toothbrush out of place when placed on the bed to inspect the kit. Upon returning from school, kids are the names of those to be punished published in the morning room. The flogging was carried out in private rooms after dinner and before lights out. Offenders called a queue in the lobby shouting "Next!". His wife was loved by children and heard their cries of pain, sometimes enters the room where the beatings took place and ask him to tone it down. Rembered fondly by one former student, prefect of the house, Fritz was considered in general as a grossly unfair and sadistic bully who should never have been in the care of children.
Boz was ex RAEC and was a quite strange. In my first year at school as punishment for inattention in class, I ordered to go to science lab the following Saturday. In the back of the laboratory was a storeroom and he told me to go there and take off my clothes. I had to be in the middle of the room and, while not touch me, which kept coming and I look through a small window in the door between the lab and warehouse. I had never been so scared in my life and, after standing there for two hours, finally I wet. Then let me go and never told anyone. Later, I discovered that I did regularly with young children, was an eccentricity that no one paid attention. Besides teaching science, ran all the swimming that was given ample opportunity to study young children, including more closely.
This behavior was not the prerogative of the warrior class. Murderer was a professor of civil history checks done regularly 'cap' of younger students who wore shorts. This involved rubbing the thighs every child to find the legs cracked, although there may be no reason possible for a teacher to conduct the review. Children who he believed had cracks were told the report. A murderer home midwife had a fascination with the mummies and was fond of demonstrating how they were embalmed, which simply become an excuse to rub your hands all over a hapless victim. He could terrorizing a school with a scathing and sometimes resorted to corporal punishment by a cylindrical map reader, who nicknamed 'The Persuader Percival' as a baton. His teaching method was originally write answers to essay questions on the board and have students laboriously copy them word for word. The method apparently worked, because it has excellent results! Once I was accused of stealing another boy stamp collection and interrogated for over two hours. I refused to plead culprit and the culprit was eventually caught and deported. There was no subsequent apology murderer and I was not expecting one. I saw him years later, but avoided it, yet makes me shudder.
You could imagine that the return of a popular child to school as a teacher would be a cause for rejoicing. Initially it was. Alf is married school secretary and was seen as a sporting hero. Unfortunately, he quickly adapted to the new regime quickly fell from favor, with a behavior abroad have been considered during his time as a child. On one occasion, a rugby team hit everything to lose a game. His work is based, however, was to get children to form a line and raise one foot six inches off the ground. Then pass the line with a stick and hit any child whose foot was less than six inches above soil. He is remembered as a despicable man who terrorized the entire house and individuals;. a worthy successor to the adorable Fritz had made the same house a few years ago It was really pathetic behavior of a man who was a commissioned officer in the army of His Majesty and had much to offer. It is now best remembered for always end bloody nose in the annual Masters v boys match rugby.
But the pay is not always administered surreptitiously. There were two housemasters the cane from time to time all members of your household in a mass parade of punishment. By coincidence, they themselves were on the receiving end of a beating by boys during a on their orgies. Interestingly, both responded to Nicholas Nickleby attackers to dismiss the rest of the queue, and beating a hasty retreat. Later, kids pornographic material found in a teacher's desk and was forced to leave, but not before someone had crashed his car into a monument to the fallen school. The other teacher went to a little more rewarding career in the Army, attaining the rank of brigadier general and was awarded the OBE.
Of records collected by the chroniclers of the school, these brief examples are just the thin edge of a wedge nastier than has come to light over the years. Today These days, with a greater concern for child abuse, teachers have been expelled so fast that their feet have hardly touched the ground.
Bathing naked
Unlike most schools in the area, the school had a pool and was able to send teams to compete in the various county and national competitions. Naturally, the group had a lot of rules and regulations, and times when I was out of bounds, so we went to all night secret. These were fun, but running the risk of being caught and banned from the pool, or worse.
Occasionally, we take our swimming rags to the port of Dover, and after limping painfully through the shingle and pebbles, paddled around shivering in the oily water. Then one day, someone discovered a route to the beach the cliffs near the school. The cliffs are the tunnels, warehouses and checkpoints, but with the end of the war, they had been abandoned by the military authorities. The route we discovered that it was not a walk, but a struggle up a steep zig zag path with a drop of 20 feet at the end of the beach. The Zig Zag, as we called him, became our private beach and spent many hours of sunshine than on weekends. The fall of the beach was a bit difficult but we managed to get some rope and fight as best we could. Near the fall, there was an abandoned gun battery and the cave where we could explore and enjoy our military fantasies. Had a major impact. Upon returning from the beach, often stopped the string before the last person who could go and then see their frantic struggle the face of chalk. This was particularly good sport when the tide was rising.
The Zig Zag missed the last resting place of the largest boat candle in the world at that time. In 1910, the 4765 ton five masted Preussen had collided with a steamer near Beachy Head and towed by a tugboat, he had almost made with the port of Dover. There was a storm, the lines broke and the ship was wrecked on the rocks below the cliffs. There were remains of other visible from the cliffs too. The cliffs are up to 300 feet high in places and support a rich variety of wildlife, including lizards, insects and butterflies. Skylarks rose above of us in heaven, and safe from predators, kittywakes, fulmars and peregrine falcons nest on the chalk. Besides the spectacular views and the birds, the top of Cliff has also provided some free goodies. We make bouquets of red clover, and sucking on the ends to try the sweet nectar. Later discovered that we were buying massive amounts of many strange little creatures that inhabit these faded flowers and enthusiasm, but still proved clover Plush nuggetts better.
OK, but what about health and safety? Let's see some current guidelines for group participation in 'actitivies outdoor water margins and see how it measures up. I have given a score of 10 for each item.
Environment: Are there cliffs above or below you? Could someone knock down loose stones? How close to the edge they are? Set physical boundaries beyond which the group should not risk. (7 / 10)

Today, our ZigZag has become a tourist attraction. There are handrails, appropriate steps, and the fall of the beach has a safety ladder. There may even be a lounge and a takeaway. I would go back there someday and go for a swim, but you can check on the health and safety issues come first. Because, as social workers like to say, mistakes were made, lessons learned, improvements have been made, and the situation has improved a lot.
Cross Country Race
If you are blessed with the legs of a gazelle and lungs of a leopard, running cross country is a special hobby. A wonderful sport that is fought relentlessly along rural roads, through fields board, jumping over hedges and bushes, and throw yourself with joy over the goal line between the ecstatic applause from the spectators. If, however, has a small average child's physical and natural tendency to avoid unnecessary or excessive exercise, which it is not just a living hell.
At school, there were three cross country courses and that depends on your age. The junior ran along the edge of the school and had about two miles long. Initially, the intermediate route followed his junior year and then separated by a road called executioner Lane, in the direction of a windmill into disuse. Some children boasted that the factory provided the ideal cover to grab a quick smoke before hitting home. The upper course, which wound through the cliffs of Dover, remained a mystery until the day I left. I do not remember ever completed.
The junior year was more than a pleasant walk and followed a path of nice grass outside the school gate. Running rabbits from their burrows and larks rose on the fields of Kent. Today, the road has disappeared in six lanes of the A2 from Canterbury to Dover, and is home to a fast food restaurant, parking and a gas station. The intermediate level course, however, followed a country road dust that still remains untouched by progress. Encouraged by the enthusiasm and fitness than their peers, cajoled by the boys higher among older teachers intimidated by the push bike, there was absolutely no escape. How can anyone find the time to turn on and enjoy a Woodbine in the crowded road, beggars belief. Any rabbits stop to admire the athletes who have been trampled to death. Breathless, at some point staggered back through the school door and collapsed gratitude for the locker room floor. What some of us have done to avoid this torture.
Sometimes, two of my friends and I would like to discuss strategies to tackle the intermediate course. We tried different types of footwear, shortened the step, extending our rhythm and our pace varied so on. Nothing worked. Simply were not designed to carry out this type of activity physically ridiculous. So a day, a solution we gradually realized. It was so obvious you wonder why we had not thought about it before. The fact that none of us would be invited to stay in the sixth form, it may suggest why. Both junior and middle classes began at the gates of the school and agreed to reach the corner of the border school. At this point, the junior course continued around the border, while the intermediate course was three miles to the mill and back before to meet with the junior course again. All we had to do was find a way of disappearing from the intermediate course, and taking the shortcut provided by the lower course, without being seen. This planning took place more than you can imagine.
The first thing we did was to observe how children perform different throughout the course. The real athletes and runners were well known and ready soon to show the rest of us a clean pair of heels. Then, of course, the coaches were slow; which would one day become obese truck drivers and butchers ruddy. Interestingly, one of them became a bishop in the Church of England. No sense to walk with them, to be followed by a teacher on a bike or an older child with a stick. It was the fall in the middle to occupy our attention. Where was the best place to position within this group to depart from Lane Hangman and scuttle to the junior year without being seen?
Over time, we found realize that a large gap opened fairly quickly among the best riders and the rest of the field. Through the implementation of the Hare (who had no reason to keep looking back), and then gradually falls back to sea (always looking back), we would find a gap in which to make our official start of the set route. In short, we were able to escape when no one would see us. Of course, running with the hares was tiring but worthwhile in the long term.
Back to the top was a relatively easy question because I could see the racers up trees, and blew and blew it again in small groups. With a good time, and trying to tie our shoelaces, which perfectly fit ourselves back into the pelaton and made the right men galloping noises like Marathon back to the school gates for tea.
Did it work? Yes there ever been caught? No. Well, there was a time that had stopped to rest and admire the field of runners making their way into the distance along Lane executioner. Suddenly we were surprised a group of young children who threatened to inform about us. What silly boys! It was very close to finishing in the parking lot that now adorns the road and we had no more trouble from that direction. If our deception is discovered, it would have been rejected by peers. Well, it was quite inconsistent with the true spirit of the school song: Play the game! Play the game! Always play the game!
The Great Escape
Of all the crimes they may commit a child in school, there was no nothing worse, and brought nothing to a more severe punishment than flee. I'm not talking about being away for a few hours but the act of escape, making a bed, leave without permission. Today These days, in similar circumstances, a child would be returned by a master type, given a nutritious meal for his wife then provided with several sessions counseling to help deal with the reasons for his unhappiness and explore strategies to overcome their difficulties. But not in the 1950's. The police and all armed forces stationed near the school, were asked to keep an eye open for a child in military uniform. Having no other clothes to wear, and dressed like an advertisement the army surplus stores, which have been highlighted as a sore thumb while trying to hitch a lift from a truck passing occasionally Dover Road London.
Detainees, who were to be returned to school and immediately interviewed by the commander, a crusty old colonel who was probably in the Raj, on the western front in the Boer War and at Waterloo. "Boy, do you realize you left the school down? In fact, I've disappointed, having left the memory of your brave father down, having left his country down and have let down their queen. "From the commander office, it was a short walk the Regimental Sergeant Major. Entering the door, the boy would notice a rack of rods that appear above the table of the RSM and possibly a wonder will soon know about. The ungrateful reprobates then remove the sleeve from the inside of his pants if textbooks or leaves thick protective Cardboard is segregated into him. Then, turning or holding down on the heavy oak desk of RSM, will receive six strokes of the cane on the buttocks. Swish! Swish! Swish! Swish! Swish! Swish! The punishment was usually preceded with something like 'This is going to hurt me, boy, much more than what you want. "Quackery or similar. The school medical officer was usually in attendance at the flogging. I wonder if he brought a bit of salt with him? The child leaving the administrative block and head of his home with tears in his face. It would hurt more than the old warrior khaki administering it, but later proudly show pain blue / black welts across his back to his friends in the bedroom. After turning off the lights, he would whisper how his adventure had been developed and is likely to adorn some of the facts surrounding his short-lived bid for freedom.
Another punishment that await you at the end of the week in which officers were weekly orders printed and distributed around the school. In them, to see his name, his crime and punishment published as a public announcement. If he were a "child pension (a euphemism for an orphan), discovered that it would lose a "deserter" or gallon of good conduct from his uniform and a penny a week from its state always pays. Also, be limited to school grounds for the remainder of the term. In eight houses, the children gather around to read the warnings and discuss the breathing strokes contained. Swish! Swish! Swish! Swish! Swish! Swish!
Although there every year two or three "Great Escape", I can hardly remember any of the boys who took the walk to freedom. There are, however, two that had an interesting experience and I'll call the big and small. Great, as you can imagine was While overweight and clumsy, while little waif was just a little underdeveloped. They were the best of friends and I knew them well. When news they had made a bed, was the talk of the school because of all the children who might be tempted to escape, were the least, and at least promising, candidates. However, one night, had somehow gathered courage to get up and go. The heavy military boots were made for walking.
What is remarkable about its absence that lasted over a week, a record for school standards. Indeed, after a few days, children were betting exchange (bags of candy rationed) about how much time will elapse before the two were captured or surrendered, or in what extent was that you? Where were they living? How were the survivors from day to day? Could you ever see them again? Even the teachers began to show great interest in our deliberations, even though they knew they were trying to gather information about "the fugitive's whereabouts in order to ingratiate with senior managers of the school. With skill, which led them astray. "Last week, I heard her whisper something about Folkestone, sir."
Well, all holidays comes to an end and they were returned to Dover looking for is not the worst of their experiences. Apparently, he had hooked his way to London and spent several nights sleeping in parks or churches, which were rarely locked up in those days. During the day, they scrounged food from market traders and probably it helped a few goodies. Over time, needing some ready cash, they did a very curious thing. But showed some initiative, I think today we would call obvious, They stood on the steps of the Cathedral of St. Paul and the money "Collection of Paul" from a handful of tourists passing through with a can marked. Perhaps his military uniform were given an air of respectability, there would have been their spelling or writing. They seem to have been very successful and had collected enough two rolls of bacon that should appear on the steps of the cathedral, but a Rev. Chad Varrah.
Varrah Chad was a working parent to Toch, a charity International ease the burden on others. In fact, emblematic of the organization of a bronze lamp has contributed to the strange English language, sometimes referring to someone as "like a thin as a lamp Toch. Chad, who was in the process of creating the Samaritans had seen the two guys working the crowd near the cathedral and asked them about their mission to raise money. It did not take long to realize that there were more a pair of fugitives, and organized starvation return to school at night. I doubt if he had any idea what kind of reception that is expected of them when they arrived at the administrative office school. Small and large knew very well what to anticipate and took his punishment bravely limping before returning to the bedroom to meet our demands curious. Captivated hear his description of the streets of London and the strange characters they met, but never found out why they did it. Maybe it was just the pure pleasure of it, but really exploded in our opinion, as a result of record Escapade.
Years later I learned that one of The two friends had joined the medical corps as an orderly manner and is believed to have died while serving in the Malayan jungle. If there once your school, country and the queen down, so that certainly made up for it. But always remember him as one of the guys who actually made it all the way to London. Your Toc-H lamp never have been mitigated.
Expulsion
The expulsions were few and far between. It refers to a child who remember well to realize contributed to his downfall.
Sam was a little difficult Eastender. He had a round face, a mop of jet black hair and dark eyes penetrating. We joined the school together and were in the same bedroom. Within a week, Sam began to intimidate smaller, weaker children and became very unpopular. The Housemaster entered him for the junior boxing tournament with the hope that some of this aggression could be removed from it. Unfortunately, This did not work, Sam won the contest and became even more serious. Now I could push other kids around with a certain degree of arrogance.
Then things began to disappear from our closets. Some of the boys found that the packages of candy or small amounts of money had disappeared. There was no locks or security devices in the house so she decided to trust others, but it was evident that a thief among us. A trap was laid with the help of a Mars bar marked popular chocolate treat in 1951 cost about 5d (2p). As soon as it became known that missing children told the Housemaster and output to all bedrooms, while inspecting their lockers. The empty container and wrinkled, but notable, was found at Sam's.
Although there was always a possibility that the container had been placed there by someone else, a bit of money that Sam could not explain was also found, and was given a stern warning. Did not seem to worry a bit and he went on as if nothing had happened. Thereafter, while maintaining elements disappear without trails led back to him, and children became distrust of each other.
On February 6, 1952, I was walking down a path when Sam came walking in the opposite direction. I was always wary of him and asked if he could hit or push me out of the way to go. She stopped me and said, 'Do you have a sweet, mate? Before you know the king is dead? "I expressed my regret at the news that he was beginning to seep into the school." Well, does not bother me, "he said and carried on the road. When the King's wife had visited the East End during the Blitz, Sam's mother was probably one of the loyal subjects standing in the rubble of their houses and cried 'God Bless you ma'am. You're one of us. "During the funeral of King, we were forced to sit in the large living room and listen to a station Radio Service is described in poetic detail and with great expectation by Richard Dimbleby. We all try to look deeply shocked and disturbed by the untimely departure our monarch, but in fact we were rather bored and started to worry, for what is given to reading serious books. If there had been, "Where's Wally? 'Not included in the selection of approved literature.
In Westminster Abbey, King's coffin had lain in state, guarded by four soldiers. They stood as living statues with their heads bowed at the four corners of the raised platform or bier. "My dad one of those soldiers," said Sam suddenly. "It's in the National Guard regiment and the life that is their job." Royal Guards on duty that day certainly, but if you include Sam's father, who you never know. They are often left with strange statements and did not know what to do with them. We do not even all that sure if there was a father.
Spring attitude and his short school career approached its end. Each house had a great day airy room where children can relax, read newspapers and play billiards. He was one of my duties to keep the room clean and tidy day. Several regiments were sent to school framed prints or soldiers glorious campaigns horse. 'The third Madras Light Cavalry trotting past the Viceroy of India ", and order of things. Each frame usually had the logo regimental cap attached to it. In a military school, cap badges were collected often as valuable stamps. We had an impressive collection of prints and I kept them line the walls and dust. It was while the Housemaster was asking a question about one of these impressions, I noticed his cap badge had disappeared. When I told him, point stared for a few seconds, then turned on his heel and left the room. He went immediately to the local Sam, emptied it and found the missing cover plate hidden among some clothes.
It seems so harsh a price to pay for nicking a metal cap badge, but the school had clearly had enough of Sam and his ways thefts. He was sent to pack his case and soon battered his way to London. Many of the kids were happy to see the last of him. Later, often wonders what became of him. What did your mother say when she appeared at the door? That school had to go? Do you get a good job or end up in prison? There were so many unanswered questions, but never heard or seen him again.
