Black Football Players Rush Limbaugh
Black football players out against Limbaugh
If one were to Google "lightning rod" a cadre of conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh seems. In 2003, Limbaugh may have made millions of enemies in the African American community on ESPN saying the quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles' Donovan McNabb was overrated and playing in large part because the media wanted to see a successful Black quarterback. He was forced to resign his position as commentator for the NFL in that network. Now, the employer can become dozens of Black football players if you follow through on a clear interest in buying the St. Louis Rams.
Limbaugh, 58, has made a good salary by issuing polarizing political statements from his privileged position as a conservative commentator and talk radio show host. He has a longstanding interest in the sport, starting during his days as a radio personality and fan Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1970s, their many years of employment in the 1980s as director of promotions for the baseball team Kansas City Royals. Now, he says is considering investing part of his fortune in the purchase of a franchise in the NFL.
In a statement issued on October 8, Limbaugh said on his association with St. Louis Blues owner Dave Checketts a bid for the Rams. Limbaugh did not elaborate, but said he and Checketts "have made an offer to buy Rams and continue the process. "
It is unclear whether Limbaugh and Checketts will try to buy the team or buying a majority or minority the same. Georgia Frontiere's children owns a 60 per cent in the equipment, and billionaire Stan Kroenke has a stake of 40 percent.
Some Black football players find this alarming. Mathias Kiwanuka, the New York Giants said he would never play for a team owned by Limbaugh, even the Rams, who are coached by former defensive coordinator Steve Spagnulolo Kiwanuka.
The New York Jets Bart Scott told the New York Daily News that he agreed with Kiwanuka. Scott said that Black football players remember what Limbaugh said, adding that the NFL would not be wise to allow the nationally syndicated host to the league. "It's an oxymoron that criticized Donovan McNabb," said Scott. "Many of us took it as more of a racial type thing. I can only imagine how his players feel. I know you would not like to play for him. He is an idiot. It is a ---. What he said (on McNabb) was inappropriate and insensitive, totally outside the base. He could offer what he wanted, not wanted to play for him. ... I do not play by Rush Limbaugh. My principles are older and can not be purchased. "
The anti-Limbaugh extends beyond Kiwanuka and Scott. The Players Association NFL DeMaurice Executive Director Smith, who is Black, spoke commissioner of the NFL as opposed to Limbaugh's offer to buy the Rams. In an email to the union of the Executive Committee of Smith wrote: "I spoken with Commissioner [Roger Goodell] and understand that this account is the property in the early stages. But sport in the United States is at its best when it unifies gives us all reason to cheer, and when we transcend. Our sport does exactly that when one overcomes the division and rejects discrimination and hatred. "More Later, Smith extended his feelings to Chris Mortensen of ESPN. This communication is more than they are in favor of the reality of our role in the sale of the franchise. If It is true that the issue was on [a Limbaugh's offer], I understand that the NFL no current offerings property to me or the NFLPA. I encourage our players to express their views. "
According to Mortensen, at least seven NFL players have spoken out against Limbaugh's proposed purchase of the Rams. Concerns of football players Black on one side of American principles of free speech and capitalism (basically the ability to buy what you can afford) are also at stake here. It will be interesting to see how Goodell and NFL owners walk this public relations and possibly legal tightrope. Three quarters of the 32 league owners would have to approve the sale.
