Company History
Sports Mitchell and Ness opened in Philadelphia in 1904. Frank P. Mitchell, a former AAU champion tennis and wrestling, and Charles M. Ness, an avid golfer born in Scotland, with Mitchell & Ness Sporting founded in 1904. His original shop done and tennis rackets hanging handmade with wood imported from Scotland, golf clubs custom built. In time, they expanded their business, selling uniforms for local baseball and soccer teams. When Eagles Philadelphia entered the youth in the NFL in 1933, H & N provided the team jerseys and equipment. Mitchell & Ness will continue to equip the Eagles to the 1963 season.
The first time Mitchell & Ness tag appeared in a major league baseball uniform of the Philadelphia Athletics in 1938. In early 1940, H & N began to supply another team of Major League Baseball Philadelphia Phillies. At the end of the decade, Mitchell Ness and the label appeared in school high school and college team uniforms throughout the Philadelphia area.
In late 1970, Mitchell & Ness had dropped the business team to concentrate on its retail operation. The store became a major outlet for the hockey team and ski team.
Mitchell & Ness almost went bankrupt in 1983. Owner Peter Capolino said the Detroit Free Press, "In 1983 all the expansion I had done was gone to hell. Fired 100 people, closed two stores. Reduced the company to a small store at 13th and Walnut streets (in Philadelphia). It was down to just me and my wife. "
In 1985, a customer entered the store and asked if M & N can repair your 1960 Pirates vest used games, and the 1949 St. Louis Browns game used shirt. The two were made of wool flannel baseball uniform all had been. Mitchell & Ness found that it could do, and with the finding that M & N was capable of this task, was born an idea: play the uniforms of wool flannel baseball historically accurate.
Mitchell & Ness hired fans history and sports gurus. They dug through old newspapers, magazines, books, programs and footage of old film. Vintage consulted uniform collection across the country and visited the archives in the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown Baseball.
Major League Baseball teams had stopped taking made of wool flannel shirts in 1972. The teams now wear the shirt of polyester double knit. Dust in a warehouse in North Philadelphia, Mitchell & Ness discovered reels of old flannel baseball 50 years earlier. They were still carefully wrapped, untouched and in like new condition ready to be cut and sewn.
The shirt was sewn. The letters and the patches were re-created and implemented. The jerseys were completed and were put on sale. The shirts started selling most of the night. So did the second batch of a dozen or more. Over time, Mitchell & Ness attracted customers from all over the United States. Sports Illustrated wrote a flattering article on M & N in June 1987. The New York Times wrote about the company two years later.
