Why support a team that you have no connection with?

One of my best friends is from Oregon. His favorite college football team is the Florida Gators. We both go to the University of Arizona. He can care less for the Wildcats. I asked him why he likes the Gators and he says he just does.

I don't get it. Why not just like the Ducks or the Beavers or maybe even the Wildcats considering that's the school he goes to? Instead he likes the Gators. He has no family, friends, or any other connection with Florida. I just don't get it.

Maybe he has a man-crush on Tim Tebow.

Seriously, people have all kinds of reasons for liking a team. My family is from MI but my mom will occasionally watch the Saints though she understands nothing about football because "Drew Brees seems like a nice young man and he's a Boilermaker like my daughter." My brother likes Jeff Gordan because "his car looks cool." Then two months later he found out my husband likes Ryan Newman and my brother switched drivers. I liked the University of Tennessee when I was a younger because I saw them play in the Citrus Bowl and I liked watching Peyton Manning. I had already decided well before then that I was going to Purdue University, some place I had no connection to until I got there. I look into Purdue because I saw the marching band on TV, then found it was a really good school. But decision was initiated by the band.

Does it really matter what the reason is? Reason and logic aren't always traits people have, particularly when it comes to sports.
