How come the Division 1 College football cannot have an 8 team playoffs?

It seems if they change the season to 10 or 11 games, then an 8 team playoff would not be too many games in the end. Actually, only two teams will have played the 14 total games (the ones in the championship game). I do not like college football for this reason. Play 9 games in your conference and you can play 2 non-conference games, in case certain schools want to schedule cream puff university in the beginning of the season. Then in the end, 8 teams go at it for a championship. I think fans could live with that instead of the currernt ignorant system they have. They could STILL have bowl games for those not in the playoffs.
