the oldest university in Michigan, the University of Michigan was founded 20 years before the territory of Michigan became a state. Originally located in Detroit, U of M moved to Ann Arbor in 1837. The U of M Wolverines sports teams participate in NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and the Big Ten Conference in all sports except men's hockey. Detroit Titans are the NCAA Division 1 college team. Competing in the Horizon League, UDM is consistently a contender for the Horizon League men's basketball title. known ESPN college basketball commentator Dick Vitale, was coach of the men of Detroit head basketball for four seasons before serving as School Director Athletics. He also coached the Detroit Pistons.
The red, white and blue Titans will be the host institution for men's NCAA Regional 2008 Midwest basketball and 2009 Men's Basketball Final Four, which played at Ford Field.
