Handicapping Theory for Boxing

By Law Gardner
Before the game Pro Handicapper

To the ignorant the sport of boxing, logic would dictate that one generally has a 50/50 chance of selecting the winner of a boxing match. In a world where everyone is absolutely equal, the last statement is quite logical. In the real world, especially in regard to the sport of boxing, the above statement is nonsense.

How can accurately predict the winner of a boxing match? The answer: careful analysis.

Whether or not you are a person who enjoys the thrill of gambling occasionally fight, or someone who takes bets on boxing very seriously, the key to successful betting is in the following:

The ability to assess get the level of skill of a boxer, natural athleticism and mind.
Research statistics boxer (ie number of global struggles, victories, losses, the quality of the opposition, the history of fans, etc) and then doing a head to head comparison with statistics from his opponent.
This The latter can be achieved by simple online research (ie, record a boxer, age, height, reach, opponents, etc. are all accessible on the Internet) and insight on how to interpret the data (which will be discussed later). However, the level evaluation of a boxer skills, athletics and the psyche is a bit more complex.

There are 9 main categories I can evaluate on a scale of 1 to 100 when I'm analyzing skills of a boxer and the psyche: speed reflexes, technical, natural athleticism, glued, boxing style, durability, general conditions, the level of trust and "will to win "factor. It is safe to say that professional boxers who score high in all these categories are world champions, or will soon. I will define the characteristics specific category below:

Reflection rate:

This category is undoubtedly the most important weapon in the arsenal of a boxer. It goes hand in hand with natural athleticism - is a quality that in its purest form can not be taught or learned through repetition, but rather a person is either born or not. The simplest explanation is the rate reflects the amount of time it takes your body to react to a signal from the brain. Reflex speed manifests the offensive capability to defeat an opponent punch and defensive in the ability to react to the beat of an opponent before landing.

Technical capacity:

You could say that the technical capacity is a window to the soul of "the sweet science." Is a set of offensive and defensive skills that can be learned and improved through repetition and proper instruction. Those who do not have a high degree of technical ability will not last long in the sport, but those who have a much greater likelihood of a successful career. It is difficult to find a current or former champions who did not have a long career amateur. Boxing fans builds solid foundation for the "essential" of a professional boxer - straight right, jab fast, strong hook, good balance, punching and combination sound defense - all the traits to look for when assessing the talent of boxing.

Natural Athletics:

I am one who sincerely believes in the ideal that "all men are created equal ", with the exception of the intelligence and natural athletic ability. As the speed is a natural reflection genetic athletics instead of a trait that can be acquired through practice and repetition. In assessing the natural athleticism of a boxer, find the fluidity of movement, the delivery of an explosive punch, and a high degree of quick reflexes.

Punching power:

Boxing knockouts would not like baseball, with no homers. Some of the most famous names in boxing tradition - Dempsey, Marciano, Foreman, Tyson, Hearns, Hagler - all had great power punch. Punching power is a feature highly coveted in boxing. A combination of proper technique, balance, speed of reflexes, athleticism and raw natural power. In a duel between boxers appear to be similar in all areas, but has a much higher percentage of knockouts, always go with the heavier punch.

Boxing Style:

Just as professional football teams can be identified by their style of play - a team in place, a defensive team, a dynamic team that passes, etc - Boxers can be identified by their style of boxing. When evaluating an upcoming fight, identifying particular style of a boxer is given an advantage. For example, if both fighters have a style defensive, aimed at combating punching, betting the "over" would be prudent because of the overwhelming probability that the fight will go the distance. When 2 highly offensive knockout artists face each other in the ring, it is logical that the bet the "under", because the odds are in favor of a coup Grace will occur early and middle rounds.

Durability:

As a fighter progresses in their career and face a higher level of competition, durability becomes an important factor. The higher the level of competition, the more likely you will have to absorb more punches. Conditioning plays a huge role in the durability of a fighter. When a fighter is in excellent condition, is able to withstand more hits than a fighter less conditioning. In assessing the durability of a boxer look for things like the number of times you have been knocked out, how many fights has gone the distance and the way he has responded to low blows in previous fights (ie not recover quickly, once you down to stay down, etc)

Packaging:

Boxing is undoubtedly the most physically demanding sport there is. You can compare the performance of a marathon in which he hit in the face every 20 meters. Far more fights are ultimately determined by the boxer is in better shape, rather than who has more talent. When evaluating a boxer fitness level, look to the past struggles in which he may have been knocked out in the middle to late rounds, as well as a noticeable decrease in total production of punch.

Confidence Level:

This aspect of the psyche of a boxer can have a tremendous effect on the outcome of a fight. I'm ready for the championship heavyweight Mike Tyson vs Michael Spinks fight in 1988 as an example. This fight is over before it began. Spinks The time climbed through the ropes for the pre-fight introduction, you could see in his eyes that he believed was a dead man walking. Because of his extreme lack of confidence, which could have been a great party became an ambush - a vicious knockout round 1st. If you are able to ensure that a fighter's level of confidence is low going into a fight, betting on his opponent would be prudent.

Will to Win:

It is safe to assume that in most boxing matches taking place, both fighters have a similar "will to win" level. However, in a situation in which a boxer clearly has more at stake than his opponent - as a victory that will put you in line for a shot at the title - is necessary to consider this "X-Factor" in its overall assessment.

Now that is equipped with the appropriate tools to assess the skill level of a Boxer, natural athleticism and mind, let's turn our attention to the importance of statistical research.

This part of the evaluation process is much simpler than the evaluation of the last 9 categories, which consists of a simple comparison between the statistics of each fighter. Research statistics below either online or through the numerous boxing publications available, and then just head to make a comparison head between the 2 fighters.

Triumphs and defeats.
knockout percentage (divide the total number of fights in the number of KOs).
Number Total times that a boxer has been KO
Age
Height
Reach
Weight
Quality of opposition (ie, number of opponents fought rated)
Amateur background (ie, number of amateur fights)
Quality Trainer / Management (trainer of a boxer and management team plays an important role in the overall success of the career of a boxer).
Now that you're armed with the right tools for research and analysis, the next big fight could not only be very entertaining, but profitable. Smart bet my friend.
