Why college football preseason rankings?

Why are the teams ranked before the season even starts? How can you even begin to compare? Doing this destroys everything else the rest of the season as the only teams to lose their place in line when they lose. So there was no chance of Utah in the North Carolina game last year. It is totally arbitrary and is rubbish. I also find it funny that people will be located one team over another, while the purpose of touring the lowest ranked team is better.

That's why I'm not a fan of the rankings .. period.
