Passes and Plays in College Football

American professional football has its origins in college football. It remains extremely popular today among students, alumni, and other fans of the sport. Many students who participate in high school football playoffs later join tryouts in football recruiting. Some exceptional students have enough talent to attract the attention of recruiting coaches after making exceptional plays in high school football playoffs.

A forward pass—usually referred to simply as a pass—consists of one player on the offensive team throwing the football towards a teammate, toward the opposite team's end zone. This is permitted only once during what is known as a scrimmage down by the offensive team, before teams have changed possession, and provided that the pass is thrown from in or behind the neutral zone. An illegal forward pass results in a 5 yard penalty and the forfeiting of any down that has been made.

If a player available to receive the ball legally catches the pass, it is considered a complete pass, and the receiver may then attempt to advance the ball into the end zone. The athlete who is making the pass must be a member of the offensive team, and the teammate attempting to catch the ball must be an eligible receiver. He must also touch the passed ball before any ineligible player does. If a player on the opposite team legally catches the ball instead, it is called an interception. The team immediately gains possession of the ball and the player may attempt to bring the ball to his opponent's end zone. If no player is able to legally catch the ball, the pass is considered incomplete, and the ball becomes dead once it hits the ground. The game goes back to the original line of scrimmage for another down.
