The happiest man at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC on Saturday (12-20-08) was Wake Forest quarterback Riley Skinner, who achieved the perfect comeback.
In early September Skinner had a horrible game against the Navy on his own ground, throwing 4 interceptions and fumbling once as the Midshipmen pulled off an upset 24-17. The opposite occurred Saturday was as Skinner 11-of-11 and threw a touchdown pass from Ben Wooster advantage in the 4th quarter to lead his Demon Deacons to a 29-19 victory on return from Marina in the first Bowl EagleBank.
"Obviously he had his best game of the first time," said Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe. " Today in the rematch, I do not know if he could have played better. "Well done, Jimbo.
Skinner perfect day passing broke the school record 33 years of age, to an accuracy set by Mike McGlamry in 1975. Skinner finished with 166 yards passing and added a conclusion in an attempted conversion.
Skinner, a junior, helped his 16 teammates won the highest class in school history and ended his career with a record of 32-19, 3 bowl appearances and the 2006 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship.
Marina Rashawn King picked up a fumble and rambled 50 yards for a touchdown to help the Midshipmen to jump to an early 13-0 lead. Skinner, however, can not be denied on this occasion. Wake Forest left the field to score in the last minute the first time and then did it again to open the second half, putting the Demon Deacons to 14-13.
Navy scored again in the 4th quarter to recover the lead, 19-14, after a 2-point conversion did not happen.
Skinner went to work in a 80-yard drive that ended in touchdown pass Wooster, and the addition of a successful 2-point conversion to Devon Brown in the back of the end zone, making it 22-19 at Wake Forest. Rich Belton put the icing on the cake with a 36-yard touchdown with 54 seconds left.
Wake Forest came up with some support to run as Kevin Harris rushed for 136 yards, scoring Josh Adams Demon Deacons first 2 touchdowns on the ground. Senior cornerback Alphonso Smith established an ACC record with his 21 career interception, but his fumble while makes a rare appearance on the offensive Rashawn King allowed to run again for the first touchdown Marina.
Both teams finished the season 8-5.
