Problems with the College Football BCS

The BCS (short for the Bowl Championship Series) system is intended to determine who plays in the national title game. Only the first two college football teams will be selected. This system was created in 1998 as a way of selecting two best teams for the national games.

At first, when you consider the best system to adopt human votes were taken into account. However, this would be a biased system, because if you vote based solely on humans, not computers that are becoming very popular, but can be voted to play the year after year. There is always the danger that outside biasness vote instead of performance. This will not keep the general public happy.

To solve this problem, teams came into the picture. In addition to taking the votes of the Associated Press writers and coaches in mind, the BCS system also uses classification methods seven computers to reach a total score. Various factors such as the number of losses, number of victories, when compared with the best equipment, etc. formulas are classified. The two teams with the lowest total score will be playing in the national title game. However, this system is not relieved of its share of problems.

For example, in 2000, both Florida State and Miami lost only one game. When the vote came in humans, Miami was voted as the second team and Florida State finished third. However, to everyone's surprise, when the team did the math, Florida actually came in second place - ahead of Miami. This means that Florida State really qualified for the national title game. Obviously, some fans are not happy with results.

In 2001, Nebraska lost to Colorado in the last game and did not win their conference. Colorado came out as the strongest team, winning your conference. The human voters agree, and more rooted in Colorado. However, when the classification team left, everyone was once again surprised - Nebraska qualified! Everyone thought that the BCS system must have gone crazy.

But how computers can be totally to blame? After all, nothing more than the following a set of instructions input by humans supposed to choose two teams deserve to play in the national games. Its main function is not to make everyone happy. In fact, this may be an impossible task.

Whatever system you choose BCS teams, there will be some who will be happy. Of course, all football enthusiasts University wants their favorite team to qualify. If the computer you are supporting do not qualify, they will be unhappy, and they will blame the BCS system. Perhaps for that year after year, news of flaws in the BCS system kept regenerating.

Obviously, no system in this perfect world. All major sports leagues as the NFL or NBA have their own systems, and are not perfect. But the bottom line is, do the job. Until a better system can be shown to work better than the current system BCS system will be staying.
