College Football Usc Score

Does college football need a playoff system?
We're coming down to the end of the season, and we're asking the question once again: does college football need a playoff system? We got Florida and Alabama in the SEC. Texas, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma and Oklahoma State in the Big 12. We also have some other great teams in USC, Penn State, and others.
Barack Obama suggested on MNF tonight that we need to have a playoff with the top 8 teams. My problem with this is what will happen with the upsets? Last year a #9 West Virginia Mountaineers killed the #4 Oklahoma Sooners with a score of 48-28. By Obama's theory, WVU wouldn't have had a chance.
Do we make a playoff with just conference winners, a playoff with the top 8, a playoff with a mixture of conference winners and other good teams from the top of the rankings, or some other sort of system?
Only if you're obsessed with there being a "National Champion."
Frankly, I've been a college football fan for over 30 years and I like the bowl system. There is more excitement and opportunity for fans and teams alike in the bowl system. There is also more money for the schools and communities in the bowl system.
If you had an 8 team playoff, then how do you select the 8 teams considering you have 12 conferences? There are already arguments about how the 10 BCS game participants are chosen. Even if you open it up to 16 teams (like all other divisions) there is going to be controversy about which conference #2 or #3 team is better than another's #1, etc.
Practically speaking, you cannot have a playoff AND games in late December and early January. All other football divisions finish their playoffs by mid December to accommodate final exams. Since you need at 3 weeks for an 8 team playoff (4 weeks for a 12-16 team playoff) then you'd need to start the playoffs by the second or third weekend of November. Thus, you would need to either scrap the conference championship games or have a shorter season.
