Can anyone explain the BCS?

I'm a fan of college football great, but I still do not understand the BCS. How does a team to be classified? I looked at the latest projections of ESPN and they didn't have a great team is in the BCS. Wouldnt the champion of the Big East BCS bid to get a car?

Sounds good, but the Big East gets a team in one of the bowls, although UCONN.
