Why do college football teams sometimes have two different players with the same number?
I noticed last football season that sometimes college teams will have a player on offense and a different player on defense that wear the same number. As I recall I noticed this specific condition once while watching Oklahoma University and once while watching the University of South Carolina. It doesn't seem like they could have run out of numbers, i.e. I think the restriction on how many they can dress for a game is less than 100.
OK here is my best answer.. First of all, there are some numbers that colleges retire, so that limits the numbers. Secondly a team can not have a number 0 or 00. and lastly the most logical reason. is numbers a given to a certain position. i.e. linemen 50-79, All backs(both offensive and defensive) 1-49, linebackers and WR are the lucky ones you can usually see them 1-89. and DE are usually 50-79 and usually the only ones with 90-99. So with those limitations: big name recruits wanting certain numbers, and at home games teams can suit pretty much everybody on the team if they want; that's what leads to the doubling of numbers
