FIFA Feruz And The New Law
Is it possible that in the not too distant future, the Scottish national team could consist entirely of players born outside the country?
The executive director of the Scottish Football Association, Gordon Smith had been lobbying FIFA to use the new eligibility rule, agreed by the nations of origin, allows a player who was born in one country but spend at least five years of their training in another country to qualify to be eligible for the second.
With the new manager Craig Levein a definitive record of every player who may be eligible, and indicating that it will contact all agents in the United Kingdom in an attempt to assess who might be a future star for the country.
Feruz, 15, arrived in Glasgow for seven years with his mother and two sisters younger seeking asylum because of violence between rival warlords. On October 13, 2009, Islam became the first player Feruz use the new standard FIFA meant that despite being born in Somalia who could play for Scotland football team as he had been educated in Scotland for the required five years.
While only 13 in 2008 made his debut for Celtic in the 19s and something less than a year later made his first team debut in Tommy Burns Tribute Match. International Honors soon followed and in October 20, 2009 Feruz made his international debut for Scotland's national team U-17 football U17s against Cyprus.
Feruz has been described as the best player of his generation by coaches of youth at Celtic in Scotland and he says "I've been very proud to live in Scotland. It is a great country it is now my home and I will be proud to wear the shirt of Scotland "
