History of Football

The history of football is generally traced to the beginnings of that in rugby, the English game which is very similar to football and football was also started in England in the early 1800's.

The campus of the Ivy League all played similar variations football through the mid 1800s. Then, shortly after the end of the Civil War around 1860 some schools began playing soccer organized. Princeton University frontieres some of the basic rules of football and the game became apparent. It seems strange that a game is patentable, but nevertheless the sport began to grow. The first football game in college football history after 1869 was played between Princeton and Rutgers with Rutgers as which produces winner in football history.

College Football history took another big step in 1873 when a number of schools came together to form the first rules of the game and set the amount of players on each team.
Yale coach, Walter Camp attended the final step in changing the style of football American-style rugby. Limited the number of players to eleven on each team and soccer field size at 110 yards. After creating the system of casualties in 1882 that was originally three casualties for gain 5 yards and then changed to 4 low to gain 10 yards.

Without proper safety equipment at the time the sport had become extremely brutal and dangerous for all players. There was even a number of deaths that had taken place in sport. It had become such a serious problem that the President of the time of Teddy Roosevelt called for a change and helped implement a group of 7 members elected to govern a standards organization and save the history of football. This committee eventually became the NCAA or National Athletic Association that we know today.

The committee made a number of new rules as a step forward and a series of security measures which penalized players for the rough and unsafe acts. Football was a different story when a common procedure for the time of locking arms and blocking in unison that it was just illegal. The game was shortened to sixty minutes played today and a neutral zone between the offense and defense was also incorporated.

The development of the sport led to an inevitable growth in the area of college football. the history of college football has thrived since then in an amazing weekly show. Hundreds of college teams compete each year under NCAA rules. Many universities now have conference divisions and all hope to win a grand New Year's Day Bowl. The history of football and nostalgia are alive in well in college football today.

Professional football was first played around 1895 and in 1920 the APFA and American Professional Football Association was formed. Its name was changed to what all know today as the NFL or the National Football League in 1922. The NFL started slow and mid-forties was only ten teams. A major merger then took place in 1970, combining the 16 NFL teams with the 10 AFL teams to make a great partnership with two conferences. The continued expansion of the league now with 32 teams and professionals Soccer has grown tremendously since its inception in 1869 the party of a university to a billion dollar empire. So goes the history of football.
