Even if you've never been to a football game in Texas high school, you probably know that these games and the fans who follow them are somewhat different from other games of high school football and fans. In Texas, football is a sport and not an extra-curricular activity. No, it's almost been elevated to a religion. To say that football fans of Texas high school are passionate about the place would be an understatement, an underestimation enormous.
Friday Night Lights may have been a popular first book and then a movie, but it all started with the true story of one season with the Panthers of Odessa Permian. Hollywood was not necessary to give life to the real story of this team of high school in Texas with manufacturing, the real story was already enough a legend for all the way to the silver screen.
If you think you know high school football, you have not seen anything until you've seen from the state Texas. Even the smaller schools really get involved. It is not uncommon to see the caravans that travel all the roads of Texas Friday night, the football team drill team, cheerleaders, marching bands and the promoter. All this may require a dozen or so buses. And that's not even including the hordes of parents and fans who travel with them. In a relatively few other events that you see fans travel hundreds of miles to a playoff game, and take into account that in Texas that is entirely possible. In some cases, some cities had to leave even play each other at all because of the violence that took place between fans in the stands and the sidelines during games rivals.
The exact charm school football in Texas can be difficult to describe, but one thing is certain: it feels when you experience it.
