Why is the 40 yard dash used to test football players speed?
The goal on each play is to get a first down and for a running back the first 10 yards are crucial. Also wide receivers rarely go out for passes at 40 yards or more during an entire game. If it is about speed and not quickness, why not make the total dash 30 yards or 20 yards? I know alot of you will say that players are timed after the first 10 and 20 yards, but why go to 40 yards?
It gives the coach's a chance to see how long it takes a player to get to full speed, and to see if they can hold it for ten or twenty yards.
