2009 Philadelphia Eagles Preview Fantasy Football
Greetings to all on this Sunday night. I hope everyone had a safe and 4th festival of July holiday. I again wish to extend my condolences to the family and friends of Steve McNair. I'm still shocked by what happened yesterday, but the show must go on. RIP Steve, you will be missed.
The 2008 Philadelphia Eagles will always have a special place in my heart as its DST unit was one of the main reasons that led me the title. The Eagles went up and down throughout the year but caught fire at the right time to advance in the NFC Championship game before losing to the Arizona Cardinals 32-25 a classic. The Eagles have made several offseason moves to strengthen the club both in general and also in terms of fantasy football in the game 2009. First, Jason Peters was acquired in a trade with the Buffalo Bills. Then, the Eagles made 2 more weapons for quarterback Donovan McNabb to play WR Jeremy Maclin and RB LeSean McCoy. Let's look at what the Eagles offered to fantasy owners for the 2009 season.
When head coach Andy Reid bench McNabb to Kevin Kolb for the Baltimore Ravens against many including myself thought that meant the end of the ancient times Syracuse product in Philadelphia. However, both McNabb and the Eagles returned from the dead to make a second implementation phase very nice that culminated in the defeat of Arizona. McNabb ended the year completing over 60% of his passes for 3916 yards and 11 TD 23 INT. Historically, McNabb has generally had little or nothing to work in terms of weapons outside of Brian Westbrook and Terrell Owens in the short stint was in Philadelphia. Well, that began to change last year with the addition of rookie DeShaun Jackson and McNabb have more toys this year with the McCoy and Maclin near the scene. Moreover, we should not underestimate the impact it will have on Peters McNabb protect his blind side. All indications point McNabb with an extraordinary season. If you miss 0ut in Manning, Brady or Brees seriously consider the number 5 right at the same time to see Jay Cutler and Matt Ryan out board somewhere around rounds 5-6.
Since coming to the Eagles for 8 years from Westbrook Villanova player has been doing all of Philadelphia. Westbrook possess exceptional abilities as both a runner and receiver. The problem is that every year the guy that I can not stay healthy period. After he took a knee on the goal line a couple of years ago against the Cowboys that has cost countless fantasy owners of the stations vowed never to Westbrook. You can not argue uncle when productivity is there, but we can not ignore the fact that Westbrook has never played a full game 16 times. Each season has been lost in time an injury of some kind. To make matters worse Westbrook turns 30 before the start of the '09 season where most dreaded age RB start to deteriorate. In addition, "Westy" probably lose some carries to rookie McCoy that the Eagles are very high. In the mocks I've been doing Westbrook has slipped a bit more in the same way ladani Tomlinson has. Personally, I will tell you to avoid Westbrook unless you can steal at the end of the 2nd round, but someone is going to be inevitable in him before the due recognition last name and statistics. I like McCoy as a number of 4 RB even if Westbrook stays healthy all season which is a virtual lock does not happen. When Westy hurt McCoy value will increase much more. Take a serious look at McCoy around Round 9 and 10.
Jackson was a nice surprise last year catching 62 passes for 912 yards and 2 TD McNabb finally giving reliable deep threat available. Jackson also contributes in the return game and is a threat to take it to the house at any given time. Jackson will benefit from having Maclin on the other side of him assuming he wins another position starting in training camp. Maclin as Jackson is a burner that can also help in the return leg. Jackson is a nice number 3 WR or flex option in this time to start thinking about him while you see receivers like Chad Ocho Cinco, Braylon Edwards popping out of the draft boards. As for Maclin, take a late round flyer on him. He has been available until around the round of 15 and beyond the mockery of CBS and that is a wise investment at this point. In As for the other Eagles receivers including Jason Avant, Hank Baskett, Kevin Curtis and the unique value, possibly, the wording is Curtis and would be with a round end of travel only.
With TE LJ Smith from Baltimore through free agency Brent Celek to assume the starting role. Celek caught 27 passes for 318 yards and a touchdown during the regular season but is actually enhanced in the postseason for the accounts of 3 dozens more. Towards the end of last season really Celek emerged as a favorite target of McNabb in the Red Zone and represents someone at the destination as a number of 2 TE with a lot of legs.
As has been mentioned that literally rode the DST Eagles to a championship last year. The acquisition of CB Asante Samuel of the Patriots proved to be an excellent pickup and I was a ball hawk for Philadelphia all year. Moreover, using systems bombing several defensive coordinator Jim Johnson the Eagles ranked among League leaders in both sacks and takeaways. Despite the loss of Brian Dawkins to sting Denver Broncos still consider this unit a top 5 daylight saving time on the board come draft day especially when you consider the extra boost you get when you take into account what Jackson does for the second leg. Kicker David Akers has been one of the most consistent players in the game in place during the course of his career of 11 years. I am a strong advocate of never using anything else that their selection for the last time a kicker and if you use the methodology that will have no chance as someone Akers undoubtedly snatch long before that. So concluded its consideration of the potential of the fantasy of Eagles 2009. Then: The Washington Redskins.
